The science of light

Understand the light.

Good skincare choices begin with good information. A clear introduction to red light therapy, without the noise.

Explore the spectrum

A different kind of light.

525 nmGreen light

One complete wave · wavelength

At 525 nm, green has the shortest wavelength of the four shown. More waves fit into the same distance.

590 nmYellow light

One complete wave · wavelength

At 590 nm, yellow sits between green and red in the visible spectrum. Its wave spacing falls between the two.

660 nmRed light

One complete wave · wavelength

Red light sits at the long-wavelength end of the visible spectrum. The mask’s red LEDs emit at 660 nm.

850 nmNear-infrared

One complete wave · wavelength

At 850 nm, near-infrared sits beyond visible red. You cannot see this wavelength; the pink colour here is a visual guide only.

An illustration of wavelength, not a measurement of skin penetration or treatment results.

More than a red glow.

Red light therapy, also called photobiomodulation, uses red or near-infrared light. It is studied for a range of skin concerns, but devices and treatment protocols vary.

Research on one device cannot establish what another device will do. Wavelength, output, treatment schedule and the person using it all matter.

Keep expectations considered.

At-home devices differ from professional treatments. Results vary, and a particular outcome is never guaranteed. Follow the directions for your device and speak to a dermatologist about suitability.

Beneath the surface

Every light.
Its own journey.

Light interacts with skin in different ways. Explore how wavelength influences its journey beneath the surface.

The wavelength makes a difference.

Shorter visible wavelengths are generally absorbed closer to the surface. Red and near-infrared light can travel relatively deeper. Skin properties and the light source also shape that journey.
